Robert Frank emigrated from Switzerland to the U.S. in 1947, where he was soon recognized as a prodigiously original talent. His most celebrated work was created in 1955–56, in the course of a Guggenheimsponsored odyssey across the U.S. Published in Frank’s landmark book The Americans (1959), these photographs explore a great variety of themes related to personal and national identity. In this image (an outtake from the book), Frank uses a graphic fragment of an oddly constructed campaign poster to suggest the unreality of the political process.
