A restless and rebellious spirit, Robert Frank left his home in Switzerland in 1947 for New York City. He worked for the fashion magazines of the day, but spent most of his time photographing for himself. Working with a small 35mm camera in a quick and candid manner, Frank made highly personal images. Like the Beat poets and jazz musicians of the time, he was interested in a new kind of expression: fresh, raw, and deeply human. This photograph, made in Spain, is characteristically moody and mysterious, suggesting both celebration and mourning, life and death.
