Before fleeing Nazi Germany to settle in New York in 1935, Lotte Jacobi was an accomplished portrait photographer. Influenced by 1920s modernist abstraction and the New Vision, Jacobi made a series of cameraless images called photogenics between 1946 and 1955. These images are distinguished
by their formal beauty and tonal delicacy.
