DescriptionPortrat of a woman's face. She has distinct cupid bow shaped lips and is wearing an oversized black round brimmed hat.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
In 1920s and 1930s Berlin, Lotte Jacobi was celebrated for her striking portraits of politicians, theatrical stars, and dancers. As seen in this image, Jacobi’s works were markedly modern. Here, she crafted a simple geometric composition in which the dark round brim of the dancer’s hat isolates and frames the oval of her face. Jacobi fled Berlin with her son in 1935 as the Nazi party rose to power. Settling in New York, Jacobi opened a studio and made portraits of many figures in the city’s cultural elite.
