DescriptionGate entrnace of a church.Exhibition HistoryImpressions of the Southwest and Mexico. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, September 15, 2009 – May 10, 2010, no cat.
With a respect for both artistic and documentary photo traditions, Paul Strand combined technique with humanity. Using the labor intensive photogravure process (a photomechanical printing technique using etched metal plates), Strand produced a portfolio of images of indigenous peoples, landscape, architecture and religious artifacts while living in Mexico in 1932–33. Shooting in Mexico’s rural towns, Strand captured the nature of people and the historic beauty of place in an objective and detached manner.
