In this image, shadow patterns on a porch become a dynamic arrangement of line and tone, positive and negative space. Inspired by the spatial compression and abstraction of Cubist paintings of the time, Paul Strand created a body of work that focused on the formal qualities—lights, shadow, line, and space—of everyday places and objects.
