DescriptionMultiple exposure image of overlapping figures in profile near the center of the frame. They walk along a gray-toned path with a dark nondescript background.Gallery LabelPedestrians lost in thought were frequent subjects for Harry Callahan. To create this photograph of intersecting pedestrians on a Chicago sidewalk, he took three different photographs without advancing the film in his camera. This technique, called multiple exposure, overlaps each image onto a single film negative, creating the ghostly impression of three converging figures. Callahan used this technique to express the psychological experience of walking in the city alone, but together.
