One of the most original and influential of American photographers, Harry Callahan came to the medium without formal training in the arts. What he had was far more important: a deep desire to express himself and a profoundly original visual imagination. Callahan acquired his first camera in 1938 and made rapid progress in the early 1940s. In 1946, he began a celebrated teaching career at the Institute of Design in Chicago. This work-created by making nearly 20 individual exposures on a single sheet of film-is characteristic of Callahan's inventive approach. A "simple" subject is fractured, expanded and transformed-the single moment becomes an extended duration of time; solid things are rendered transparent and dynamic.
