Gallery Label
In many of his street photographs, Harry Callahan explored a particular condition of big-city life: pedestrians lost in thought, alone in a mental realm completely their own. One of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, Callahan took up the camera as an amateur in the late 1930s. In 1946, he was hired to teach at the now legendary Institute of Design in Chicago. His students there included Marvin Newman and Ray Metzker, and his photographs inspired many others of the period, including Dave Heath.
