DescriptionImage of a mustachioed man with his hands behind his back. Another man stands next to him with his nose pressed against a fabric wall.Exhibition HistoryNew Acquisitions to the Hallmark Photographic Collection, 1980-1983. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 1 – May 1, 1983.
Surveillance. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO. September 16, 2016 – January 29, 2017, no cat.One man peeks through a gap in a cloth while another glances furtively to the side. This image was one of the first taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson using a handheld 35 mm camera. Cartier-Bresson excelled at creating images like this, in which the visual and psychological elements of a scene come together in a fleeting "decisive moment." Cartier- Bresson worked intuitively and spontaneously, often recording his subjects undetected, which imparted a charming candor to his works.
