This work celebrates the atmospheric effects of the relatively new invention of electric light illuminating the rain-soaked streets of New York City at night. William A. Fraser was one of the first photographers to fully explore the artistic potential of night photography. Critics praised this photograph as both a technical and artistic triumph when it was first exhibited in 1898.
