DescriptionOn dark gray ground, black letters UNIA overlaying white swirls above star containing photograph of crowd of black people, black velvet strip below. Velvet rectangles along left side: green, red, and black, top to bottom. Right side, printed areas of color, some crossing arcs of circles. Grid of white lines, center bottom.Gallery LabelRadcliffe Bailey's print UNIA celebrates the Universal Negro Improvement Association founded in 1914 by Marcus Garvey. Here, we see a group of people of African origin framed inside a star. The star highlights the UNIA goal to uplift those of African ancestry by respecting the rights of all people throughout the world. The etching brings together Bailey's interest in social content, abstraction and history in a beautifully constructed visual poem.
