This sculpture reveals Henry Moore's interest in the abstracted human figure. His stated aim was to create forms that appeared to have grown inevitably and "organically, created by pressure from within." The solids and voids in the sculpture contribute equally to its power. Moore said that a hole was like a "revelation" because it "connects one side to the other, making it immediately more three-dimensional."
