Of the eighteen prints attributed to Michele Grechi Lucchese, all but five were done after the work of other artists. This image was adapted from a fresco painted by Polidoro da Caravaggio, who had in turn been inspired by ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. Lucchese's extraordinarily ornamental engraving compresses action within a very shallow illusion of depth. Dramatically twisted figures with exaggerated musculature are interwoven in chaotic, spatial confusion, a far cry from classical balance and control. Polidoro became known for his imaginative adaptations of classical sculpture, and Lucchese was only one of many artists who circulated examples of his motifs in prints.
