A short walk into the gardens of his home provided Emile Gallé with ample inspiration for the botanical decorations displayed in this cabinet's landscape scene and the entwined, carved poppies that form the brackets. Gallé's glass and furniture workshops in the eastern French city of Nancy produced innovative designs based on nature and Japanese design principles, both important characteristics of the Art Nouveau style.  Here, various grains and hues of wood veneers (marquetry) combine to create a scene of a setting sun framed by trees. This landscape is balanced by asymmetrical patterns of simplified floral motifs in the Japanese tradition.
