Paul Signac was one of the leading practitioners of pointillism, a style in which pure colors were applied in small dots to give an effect of heightened luminosity. Though primarily a painter, Signac turned to printmaking as a means to reach a wider audience. He adapted his pointillist style to the medium of color lithography, producing a small number of masterful prints that depict coastal and harbor scenes. Here, Signac achieved an effect of brilliant, pulsating light by juxtaposing the complimentary colors of violet and yellow.
