DescriptionHorizonally oriented, this dark, moody image features a lake with dense foliage behind. Two forms in the water--one red, the other white--suggest abandoned boats.Gallery LabelAndrew Wyeth paints frequently in Maine, where he likely captured the image of this lone boat abandoned in a lake. Applying washes of dark brown pigment, the artist effectively utilizes the texture of the paper to suggest the densely forested setting and murky water. The title informs the viewer that the boat is anchored, an allusion to unseen human activity, which contributes a layer of mystery to the otherwise unexceptional subject matter.
