DescriptionThe painting consists of four rectangular canvases with edges aligned so that the painting's perimeter is an uninterrupted rectangular frame. Each panel is of variable width, and colors are yellow, red, red-orange and green. Sweeping through the whole and touching the four external edges, an ovoid drawn in graphite, balances vertically on its narrow end.Exhibition History

Robert Mangold's subject matter is the interaction of line, form, color, space, surface, shape and scale. The artist stresses these components of painting and the object-like quality of the work. Yet he succeeds in translating purism into poetry: drawing the ellipse by hand and balancing all elements through an intuitive approach, rather than by mathematical formula. The graphite ellipse animates and unifies the perfectly balanced four-color painting, establishes a human presence and suggests the spectator's physical orientation in relation to the work.
