NOTES:

[1] According to Marc Leo Félix, in documentation provided at the time of the object’s purchase, NAMA curatorial files, this object “was brought back to Belgium prior to World War II and has since then been in a private collection.” The identity of this collection is currently unknown.

[2] Félix (see note 1) believed this object to be “from the Vanderstraete collection because of the original base.” This is presumably Jef Vanderstraete (1904-1984), a Belgian collector and dealer. According to the African Heritage Documentation & Research Centre database, www.ahdrc.eu, object no. 0012844, Vanderstraete bought his first African objects in the very early 1950s.

[3] Félix’s stock number is written on the underside of the object.
