Camille Pissarro first experimented with lithography (a method of printing from a stone) in 1874. After a 20-year hiatus, he embraced the medium with renewed enthusiasm. In 1896, he created a series of prints that depict the city of Rouen, France, which includes this lively view of activity along the Seine River. Though many admire these prints today, Pissarro had difficulty finding buyers. “What a pity there is no demand for my prints,” he wrote to his son. “I find this work as interesting as painting, which everybody does, and there are so few who achieve something in [printmaking].”
