Gallery LabelThis painting recalls the hallmark style of Yuan Jiang, a successful painter in the court of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) and his hometown, Yangzhou in southeast China. Here, the courtyard mansion sits on an island with cloud-like boulders. The vibrant, swirling blue and green landscape adds to the fairytale quality.
Yuan sought to revitalize the tradition of landscape painting by exaggerating mountain forms to create imaginative, fantastical scenes. His style immediately attracted many followers like the artist of this scroll.
