Gallery LabelThis view of Pittsburgh shows American industrial power of the early 1900s at full blast. Pennell is spontaneous in his technique, which differs from the more refined British and American etchers. The lines are rich and direct as if drawn with chalk. In this way the artist brilliantly conveys the grittiness of the smoke-laden scene.
