Gallery Label
Eugène Delacroix made his name as a gifted colorist. Nevertheless, etchings like this reveal his great ability to record the mood and appearance of his subjects through line alone. This interior scene of an Algerian woman and her servant was inspired by a six-month trip through North Africa in 1832. Delacroix’s direct observation of the Jewish communities he encountered is ref lected in his realistic treatment of costumes and accessories, rendered here in a f lurry of small engraved lines.
