Gallery LabelThis woman's ceremonial skirt displays the sophisticated complexity and inventive interplay of pattern that distinguish the Kuba aesthetic. The decorative band just inside the right-hand border of the cloth was created using the particularly labor-intensive cut-pile embroidery technique, creating variation in texture as well as design.
