Gallery LabelThe Dutch Republic emerged as a major maritime power in the 1600s, boasting a powerful navy and an extensive trade network. Scenes of seagoing vessels appealed to the upper classes who owed their prosperity to trade. Ludolf Backhuyzen made a specialty of dramatic scenes of conflict and peril on the high seas. Here, he captures changing weather conditions by depicting a government yacht keeling over in a sudden gust of wind.
