Mythological Subjects, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, June 12-December 15, 2013, no cat., as Hercules and Antaeus.
Hercules, the Greek hero, is shown squeezing the giant Antaeus to death. The giant remained strong only while his feet touched earth, so Hercules overcame him by lifting him clear of the ground. The nervous penmanship of the technique is typical of the light, 18th-century Rococo style.
