Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo reenacts the drama of the Holy Family's long and dangerous journey in his series The Flight into Egypt. Nine of the twenty-seven plates show the fugitives trudging through the countryside. In this etching, Joseph strides past the crest of a pyramidal hill that descends sharply to the left. Its diagonal slant draws attention to the weary Virgin Mary, relegated to the very edge of the image. Details such as the basket, flock of sheep, and thatch of vegetation bordering the path ground the sacred subject in everyday reality.
