The rue Soufflot is a street in central Paris that connects the Luxembourg Gardens in the Latin Quarter to the domed temple of the Place du Panthéon. Named after Jacques-Germain Soufflot (1713-1780), architect of the Panthéon in Paris, the street was a popular destination for artists and writers of the period, and remains a major thoroughfare today.
Here, artist Maurice de Vlaminck depicts the street in bold, black lines that define the buildings and the balustrade surrounding the fountain pool in the foreground. The steep perspective of the apartment buildings, and the central artery of the street, draws our eyes dramatically to the Panthéon, which sits atop the hill, Mont-Sainte-Geneviève.
