Gallery LabelJames Abbott McNeill Whistler’s views of the river Thames tell interesting stories of 1800s London as a center of shipping and world trade. Perhaps these two men are swapping stories about the sea, while smoking long churchwarden pipes made of clay. The silhouetted masts show this is the end of the day. The evening clouds are suggested by the etching needle’s swift strokes.
