James Abbott McNeill Whistler conveys just how it feels to be engrossed in a good book—lost in a world of words to the point where everything else fades away. The book enthralls the reader. Her entire body bends toward it. Her knees rise toward the volume’s cover, while her nose nearly brushes its pages. She and her tome are cocooned in light, while the rest of the room falls into shadow.
