Louise Miller Boyer and her daughter, Helen King Boyer, were both printmakers. The two often worked together, but they did so in different artistic styles. While Louise created a realistic portrait of her model, Helen obscured her own identity in her abstract self-portrait. Her self-portrait reflects on her bedridden childhood, during which she reported feeling as though a plate-glass window separated her from the world.

Louise also sought to obscure her model's identity. When Helen gave the portrait to the Nelson-Atkins, she noted that her mother had erased the model's name, Adriana Bradley, and wrote in the final title, The Girl with Red Hair.
