Gallery LabelShallow space, tilted perspective, and planes of flat color define Jacob Lawrence's Home Chores. Together, these elements depict a woman toiling over a sink of dishes in a Harlem, New York, housing project. Lawrence manipulated opaque watercolor to create the textures of the room. He rubbed away areas of green to create a textured floor and spread diluted wash across the yellow walls to achieve a mottled effect.
Lawrence made opaque watercolors, prints, and collages to explore social issues affecting African Americans through subjects from both history and daily life.
