Frank Hamilton was powerfully influenced by his study of Edward Weston prints in the Nelson-Atkins collection. Hamilton's technical precision and his quest to discover beauty in the local and the familiar is deeply inspired by Weston's purist aesthetic. Carriage House depicts a structure on Hamilton's former property in midtown Kansas City, while Missouri River Bottoms is characteristic of an extended series devoted to the landscape in which he grew up, in and around Platte County, Missouri. Fundamentally concerned with structure and luminosity, Hamilton is attentive to the subtle, ever-changing beauty of light and shadow.
After graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute, Hamilton received an M.F.A. in design (photography) from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He has taught classes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Johnson County Community College, Avila University, and Park University, among others.
