Picasso met the woman in this print, Marie-Thérèse Walter, in 1927. She was 17, he was 45. Their daughter Maya was born in 1935. Blond and youthful, Marie-Thérèse was the subject of many paintings and prints by the artist: asleep and dreaming in a red chair, gazing at her pregnant reflection in a mirror, head crowned in delicate f lowers, absorbed in reading a book. Here, Picasso presents his love closeup, capturing the refinement of her exquisite profile with the greatest of care.
