Compare this portrait of Françoise Gilot, Picasso’s lover, to the mask on your right. Can you see similar shapes and forms? Here, Picasso’s use of bold angles and strong play of light and dark references African sculpture. In 1907, Picasso visited the ethnographic museum at the Palais du Trocadéro in Paris and experienced an awakening. The abstract form and expressive power of African art would engage him throughout his life.
