DescriptionA cubist sculpture that is a portrait of a woman, angular in form, golden patina.Gallery Label
Ossip Zadkine spent his formative years in Paris, where he was introduced to Cubism. Ultimately, he developed his own sculptural style by softening sharply defined, complex Cubist form.

During World War II, Zadkine immigrated to the United States, and Portrait of C.J. was completed while he was living in New York from 1940 to 1945. This portrait bust of his lover, Carol Janeway, reflects the influence of Cubism through the angularity and slight shifting of opposing forms. It also features Zadkine's characteristic fluid rhythms and sensuous contours.
