DescriptionAll-over heavy impasto in shades of brown, relieved by small touches of red and white, scumbled areas of black, dark- and grey-blue. Evidence of brush strokes and incisions in surface relief.Gallery Label
Milton Resnick was considered a second generation Abstract Expressionist artist.  In later works such as Mars, however, the drips and gestural brushstrokes typical of 1950s Abstract Expressionism are buried beneath dense, coagulate layers of paint.  The roughly textured entanglement of shadowy hues lends an imposing, theatrical presence to the painting-an effect that is heightened by its composition and dramatic scale.

The title, Mars, may refer to the fourth planet from the Sun, the Roman god of war or the name of an artist's pigment, Mars black.
