Gallery Label
François Boucher was the most famous French artist in the reign of Louis XV (1710–1774) and was a protégé of the King’s mistress Madame de Pompadour. His lush and sensuous style is considered typical of the Rococo. This study relates to the painting Jupiter in the Guise of Diana, and the Nymph Callisto by Boucher (also in the museum’s collection). It is possible this study was made to be sold as an independent work of art, since there are some differences from the painting itself, for example the addition of an extra cupid on the right.
