DescriptionCanvas stretched over a wood frame into an irregular, many-sided shape. Painted in hard-edge areas of red, blue, yellow, and white.Gallery LabelWhen many of us think of a painting, we likely imagine a flat, rectangular canvas. No. 3592 Acrylic/Shaped Canvas, however, projects away from the wall and directly into our space. Is it a painting, a sculpture, or both?
In the 1960s, Charles Hinman was one of several abstract artists who disrupted traditional expectations for what a painting could be: "I think of my paintings as occupying a six-dimensional space: the three dimensions of space; one each of time, light, and color."
