DescriptionVillage street scene, from left into middleground, of boxlike houses; small group of people and horse-drawn cart in front of stores; glimpse of building at right; flat landscape and cloudy sky in background.Gallery LabelCharles Ephraim Burchfield used transparent and opaque watercolor to describe the outskirts of this mysterious, rural Ohio town. He handled the medium in the manner of oil paint, with flat, stiff brushes. Burchfield often created large, ambitious watercolors such as this one over several sheets of joined paper. He began this watercolor in 1921, painting the four buildings on the central rectangle of paper. In 1941 he returned to Edge of Town and attached additional paper to the left, right, top and bottom of the original piece. This allowed him to incorporate the bus stop at the right and the building at the left into the composition.
