This engraving was based on one of a famous series of tapestries designed by the great Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (1483-1520). The subject represents Ananias punished by St. Peter for having born false witness and he is shown struck down in the foreground. A very dramatic effect is achieved by the clear reactions of the astonished spectators contrasted with the noble authority of the Apostles on this dias.
