Exhibition HistoryThirty Years of Print Purchases for the Permanent Collection, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, November 19 - December 31, 1989, no. 3.
This chiaroscuro woodcut was printed from four different carved blocks that were inked and printed in succession, from the lightest tone to the darkest, one over the other. The subject, taken from the Bible's Acts of the Apostles (V:1-11), features Ananias, sprawled on the floor, while Peter and members of the first Christian community denounce him for falsely reporting proceeds from a sale of land. Although the chiaroscuro woodcut technique was fairly laborious, it could be done more quickly than coloring an image by hand.
