This print is a copy of an engraving by Andrea Mantegna, one of the most archeologically correct artists of the early Italian Renaissance in the 15th century. The style here is inspired by antique classical releifs, but the figures have an intensity of expression and gesture which surpasses classical models. The Tritons were half human sea gods. Here they are shown fighting with a skull and a thigh bone.
