Léon Bakst helped revolutionize ballet in the early 1900s. His colorful stage sets and costume designs for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes (1909–1929) drew inspiration from across the world. This design of teal and purple cloth with floral forms illustrates Bakst’s preference for bright colors, contrasting patterns, and sheer fabrics—quite different from the tutus of Degas’s era. In fact, Bakst’s ballet costumes influenced high fashion.
