DescriptionThis large polychrome shutter was one half of a pair that fit over a wide window. This shutter incorporates three open-work panels within a larger frame, punctuated with raised cirular floral decorations. The panel is painted with red ground, and decorated with black, yellow, and white paint, possibly with multiple layers of application. The central panel consists of a tightly woven screen with lattice and small blossoms. The top and lower panels are carved with matching designs of with large flowers on curling stems, emerging from a single yellow vase at the bottom of each panel. The panel includes a latch and chain, and an panel attached to the inside of the frame, indicating how this shutter would close against another panel in its original context.Provenance
