DescriptionBehind curving railing at boat landing, three standing old men, left, wearing caps and jackets, a fourth figure beyond, face three sailboats in water of harbor, the leading vessel with four men aboard. Brittany garb, backs to railing, a basket at their feet: figure, right, wearing peaked with headdress and apron holds another white headdress while left figure watches. foregound; empty rowboat, right, foreground.Gallery LabelGordon Hope Grant painted the sea, ships, misty harbors and fisherfolk with a signature salty zest. He spent several summers sketching along the coast of France. Gossip While Fishing at Concarneau is one of Grant's numerous, vibrant watercolors from the 1920s and 1930s that depict the Breton inhabitants of Concarneau, a shipbuilding center in northwestern France. The brilliant blue accents dashed throughout the composition may be the artist's clever nod to the traditional blue nets of Concarneau's fishing fleet.
