Fantin-Latour was a close friend of Manet (see etching to the left) but did not represent the nude with the same realism. Throughout his career, he rendered the female form with a sensuality inspired by his study of Venetian art. Here, a young woman appears as a Muse, offering inspiration to a musician at work on his composition. Her body is illuminated by the flickering light of the torch. Fantin-Latour did much to elevate the status of lithography in the 19th century, producing nearly 200 lithographs, and here he has first rapidly applied lithographic crayon before building up rich surface textures, as in the dark background, by scratching the lithographic stone. The work is inscribed to one of his pupils, Emma Callimachi, at bottom right.
