Gallery LabelAugustus Saint-Gaudens sought to create a likeness of Robert Louis Stevenson after reading one of the author's collections of short stories, New Arabian Nights. Sittings for the portrait took place in 1887 in Stevenson's hotel room in New York. Shown in profile, Stevenson reclines in bed smoking a cigarette. He draws up his covered legs to support the paper he grasps with his left hand, indicating his commitment to writing during his battle with tuberculosis.
