Gallery LabelHenri Matisse was a master of line. A mere 41 strokes comprise this pensive image of a woman. The fluidity and firmness of line convey her youthfulness, but her eyes and the position of her arms and hands tell a different story. With her arms crossed and her face resting upon her right hand, she assumes a weary, thoughtful posture. Her distant gaze underscores this sense of psychological remove.
