Gallery LabelHenri Matisse was very close to his daughter-in-law, Teeny, admiring and loving her for her courage, independence, generosity, gentleness and humor. In this portrait, he shows her in three-quarter-view, the strength of her character rendered in boldly cut white lines against black.
Teeny was born Alexina Sattler in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1906. She moved to Paris to study art in 1921 and, in 1929, married Matisse's eldest son Pierre, with whom she had three children. The couple divorced in 1949, and in 1954, Teeny married Dada artist and fellow chess player, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).
